Weighing in on Gaza

As Israel mounted its second phase in the assault on Gaza with a ground incursion bisecting the region, it came under increase political pressure to end its military campaign. The conflict, which has now entered its third week, has caused the deaths of nearly 900 Palestinians and 13 Israelis. Despite a Franco-Egyptian ceasefire proposal being drafted, both sides have refused to agree to a cessation of hostilities.

The Gleaner, January 6

Bombing Hamas may weaken its military capabilities, but the collateral damage of several hundred killed and thousands maimed is more likely to engender grievance than exterminate an idea. It matters little what any of us think of Hamas if Palestinians do not perceive even-handedness.

The New York Times, January 5

The longer the Israeli incursion, the more casualties mount; the more Hamas' popularity grows among its supporters; the more moderate Arab states, which have correctly blamed Hamas for ending a six-month ceasefire, are alienated; and the more regional instability is fuelled. ... Israel, aided by the United States, Europe and moderate Arab states, must try to end this conflict as soon as possible and in a way that increases the chances for negotiating a broad regional peace.
