'The best job in the world' - Part 2

Brenda LaGrange Johnson

This is the continuation of the exit interview that Lifestyle Editor Barbara Ellington conducted with United States Ambassador, Brenda LaGrange Johnson. Part One appeared yesterday.

When we spoke in February 2006, we looked at the possibility of a female president for your country. It did not happen. Do you think that with the Barack Obama win you are any closer to making that a reality? Sarah Palin is waiting in the wings, I don't know if Hillary Clinton will be tired of it all in four years, do you still think America is ready?

My pick, as I said then, was Condoleezza Rice and I have the greatest respect for her and think she would have been a fabulous president. Time will tell, but everyone is so much on a high right now with the Obamas on all levels, we can't think beyond that. I would love to see a female president in the future but we are in the time of the Obama presidency and we need to get behind them and honour that. One of the great things is the way our country has come together behind the new president. Republicans and Democrats have approved his cabinet picks and are pleased with his choices.

You were very involved with the arts through the monthly concert series held here, how did that come about?

It is something I copied from the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts where I served. They do a daily free concert in the atrium from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and anyone can walk in. Given our security procedures here that would be a challenge daily, but we were able to pinpoint some wonderfully talented Jamaican artistes and although every ambassador sets his or her own tone as far as culture goes, I am hoping there will be continuity there. The acoustics in our atrium are perfectly conducive to the sounds emitted at concerts here.

You honeymooned here and you have seen a lot of the country; do you have a favourite spot in Jamaica?

I am a diplomat so I can't pick one, but my children love Kool Runnings, Jakes in St Elizabeth, to jump off the cliff, the Black River Safari, Dunn's River Falls and all the other places that offer adventure. I like the resorts like the Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall, Jamaica Inn where Britain's John Major goes all the time; Round Hill with Josef Forstmayr (if I were going to be in the hotel business, it would only be if he could manage my property). We constantly go to Tryall because our family is huge and the villas are large and it offers everything. They have a fabulous tennis programme. Sandals Montego Bay has made me a convert to all-inclusives too. I was there recently with a large group and I was stunned by the quality of everything and my friends were amazed. They know how to service the customer. Those are among the places I love.

Do you have a love for any particular Jamaican food or dish?

I love chicken and I do think I have had more here than anywhere else. My children love Scotchies Restaurant in Montego Bay. It's their favourite place here. They feel they are 'Jamerican' and are often upset if when they leave they don't have a set return date. They have been here 16 times in three years. My other favourites are jerk chicken, callaloo and yams (though I'll never be Usain Bolt).

United States Ambassador Brenda LaGrange Johnson hopes that her successor will continue the monthly concert series held in the atrium, at the embassy.
