Bruce as chief cleric
The Editor, Sir:

I read with interest the prime minister's call urging Jamaicans to live by the universal teachings of the Bible, arguing that it would make Jamaica a better place.

I was under the impression that Golding was picked by the majority of parliamentarians to be prime minister. I did not know that the title of ayatollah accompanied that of prime minister. Is he suggesting that those Jamaicans who do not follow the Bible and are Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, etc, or are of no faith at all are somehow making Jamaica worse off?

Different interpretations

Ironically, the fact that there is a plethora of Christian churches, all based on the Bible, but differing greatly in their interpretation, means there really is no universal teaching.

One's concept of the Bible is usually dependent on which Bible camp you are a part of. And why is the religious persuasion of people any of Golding's business? He should be reminded that he put his hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution - not the other way around!

And if the prime minister is convinced that we should all live by the precepts of the Bible, then may I suggest that he put forward the necessary motion in Parliament to change Jamaica's political status from a democracy to that of a Christian theocracy with him being the chief cleric.

I am, etc.,
