Take him to the doc, pronto!

POSITIVE Parenting

QI'm a mother of a five-year-old boy and I need your answer promptly. I notice that whenever I'm trying to pull back my son's penis it cannot go back. I notice that the mouth of his penis is very small, that I'm not able to see the skin inside. His father is telling me that it can cause him to have problems in his sex life later down the road.

Doc, is this true? Someone else told me that it will be able to go back when he is older. Doctor, I don't want to sit here with him and then, when he gets older, it causes a problem in his life that could have been fixed from childhood. Please tell me what's best to do. I await your answer.

AIt is very important that all parents and guardians immediately take their children to a medical doctor for any medical concern they have about their children. This column primarily offers advice on social, behavioural and mental problems that children have. Please take your son to his paediatrician, quickly.

Q Thank you for the information on the speech therapy help in Jamaica. I did not know we had these services. My child is not hearing well and the guidance counsellor sent me to Kingston, to the Jamaica Association for the Deaf, for the test. I am a cashier in the country area, I work six days a week and I cannot get a whole day off. Is there anywhere else I can get help?

APlease call the Jamaica Association for the Deaf and ask if they conduct clinics in rural communities or if they know of a private audiologist who can help you.

An audiologist is a professional who specialises in identifying, diagnosing, treating and monitoring disorders of the ear. Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage and/or treat hearing problems. They may also provide clients with hearing aids. They provide counselling services for families coping with diagnosis of hearing loss in children or adults.

When you have kids, you get the full package: runny nose, nausea, diarrhoea, gripe and a slew of testy troubles that come with early childhood. The Gleaner's health specialist, Dr Orlean Brown-Earle, has all the answers. Email questions to helpline@gleanerjm.com or send to Ask the Doc, c/o The Gleaner Company, 7 North Street, Kingston.
