Adlam hat-trick buries Dominican Republic

Jamaica's young Reggae Boyz rebounded from their opening day stalemate against Haiti to register a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) FIFA Under-20 World Cup qualifiers in Kingstown, St Vincent and Grenadines yesterday.

Speedy and skilful striker, Alanzo Adlam, led the way for the Jamaicans, firing in three first-half goals, while Romario Campbell got the other, pushing the Reggae Boyz to an impressive 4-0 scoreline before the whistle had sounded for the end of the first period.

Adlam opened the scoring in the 15th minute, before doubling the team's advantage from the penalty spot three minutes later.

Campbell extended the lead for the dominant Jamaicans in the 42nd minute and Adlam completed his hat-trick, when he netted on the stroke of half-time.

Goal from penalty

Despite being in the ascendancy, things did not go as smoothly for Jamaica in the second half as they not only conceded a 48th-minute penalty from which the Dominican Republic pulled a goal back, but also the dismissal of prolific striker Dever Orgill, with a second yellow card.

However, even with that setback the national juveniles continued to create more opportunities but failed to increase their tally.

"We started out the game very positively. We knew we needed three points and needed a lot of goals and we got four in the first half, but I think things started to fall apart in the second," said national Under-20 coach, Donovan Duckie.

"We got countless opportunities to score more goals, we did not take them and I am a little disappointed about that and also the fact that we conceded a goal from what I think was a tough call," he added.

Lead scorer

While admitting that not having Orgill - the team's leading scorer in the qualifiers - available when the team closes out against St Vincent and the Grenadines tomorrow, Duckie believes an abundance of talent will still be available for selection.

"We have four capable strikers left in the team and I am sure they will be able to step up and do a good job," he said.

Jamaica now have four points, while the Dominican Republic, which lost Friday night's opener 2-0 to the hosts, are yet to score.

Haiti (1), which drew 1-1 with Jamaica last Friday, were tackling St Vincent and the Grenadines (3) in last night's late game.

The CFU final-round winners will earn an automatic berth to the CONCACAF U20 finals in Trinidad & Tobago in March 2009, along with the hosts, Canada, Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica and El Salvador.

Four teams will qualify from the region for the youth World Cup, which will take place this year in Egypt from September 25 of October 16.

The runners-up from this play-off will challenge Honduras for a spot in the eight-team CONCACAF Finals.
