The Gleaner Company to streamline operations in '09

In the current economic climate, The Gleaner Company Limited is seeking to reinforce its market leadership position in Jamaica for 2009 with a commitment to leveraging all of its media platforms (print, radio and online) to ensure that its customers receive the most valuable content, delivered in the most efficient manner and at lowest cost.

Print capacity

On the production side, the company has made a recent investment in additional print capacity, slated for commissioning by March 2009, which will see additional colour availability for its publications and enhance production efficiency.

Internet users will benefit from The Gleaner's strategic focus online to provide breaking news and updates, more interactivity, features, a fresh look, a global reach and an online platform for PDA users.

In a move to streamline its operations, The Gleaner will unfortunately have to reduce staff levels by approximately 70 positions by January 30, 2009, through voluntary redundancy, early retirement and involuntary cuts.

These regrettable, but necessary reductions, combined with an equivalent non-staff cost-reduction effort, will allow the company to add value by producing its products more efficiently and ensure its sustainability.

The Gleaner Company's success is attributed to its dedicated staff, advertisers and readers. We will continue to provide the products and services on par with the best available internationally.
