I wish to use this medium to encourage our young gospel and secular artistes to continue on the path of communicating positive messages in their songs. I have been overwhelmed by the recent emphasis placed on the need for love, peace and unity in the society. As a nation, we all need to stand up for justice, brotherhood and peace as we promise in our national pledge.
Young 'dancehall' gospel artistes have been playing a significant role by their creative presentation of an evangelical message, which is necessary for the moral and spiritual development of our young people. Many young people do not go to church. Many young people have poor self-esteem and are bewildered by the many challenges and negative situations that confront them.
Sense of hope
They depend on the various media presentations not only to entertain them, but also to give them a sense of hope and instruct their recoping strategies.
The gospel presented in musical form at concerts, whether in the church building or outside in a car park, does have a positive effect on the youth. We may not like the term 'dancehall' being attached to gospel artistes, but we should not underestimate the transformational role these artistes do play in the society.
A divine purpose
God is creative and each person has a divine purpose. Our gospel artistes, therefore, must not be discouraged by the negative comments made by specific individuals re their manner of evangelising.
The proclamation of the message of salvation is the role of the Church, and so every Christian has a role to play in saving this nation. The strategy employed may be different but the motive is the same.
I am, etc.,
