Break out the party hats and confetti because come Monday, the year 4707 begins. No, you haven't gone bonkers. The 26th of January actually marks the start of the Chinese new year. It is the Year of the Ox and is a major event for the Chinese, no matter where they are living.
Chinese months are measured by the lunar calendar, with each month beginning on the darkest day. There is, therefore, no set date for the celebration of a new year, as there is in the western world.
Named after animals
As legend has it, long, long ago, Buddha summoned all animals to meet him on the Chinese New Year. Only 12 came, and Buddha then named a year after each one.
People born in each animal's year are believed to possess some traits of that animal's personality. Those born in Ox years are said to be fearless, grounded, obstinate, hard-working and friendly.
Locally, several events are being planned to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
