WESTERN BUREAU:
WITH THE first round of the 2008-09 Captain's Bakery Western Super League now just two rounds of matches away from being completed, former Premier League outfit Seba United is just a point from booking a place in the competition's first end-of-round final.
The Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore-coached Seba United, who have an impressive seven wins, one draw and a defeat from their nine games, lead the 12-team competition with 22 points, two more than Frome FC, who have 20 points from their nine games.
While Seba United look a safe bet for the end-of-round final, Frome's bid does not look as secure as they are being challenged by third-place Granville, who have 18 points from their nine games. Granville's record reads: five wins, three draws and one defeat.
Other teams
The rest of the standings read: Wadadah - 15 points, Clarke's Town - 14, Bamboo FC - 12, Salt Spring - 10, Negril FC - 9, Montpelier FC - 9, Grange Hill - 8, Mt Salem - 7 and Violet Kickers - 6.
For Granville, who started the season as favourites despite the presence of three former national champions - Seba United, Wadadah and Violet Kickers - coach Tracey Reid believes they are perfectly placed in their bid to not only take the mid-season title but to go on to top the competition."We would have been happier if we were on top but we can't be too disappointed because we are only four points behind the leaders," said Reid, the competition's lone female coach."There are no unbeaten teams in the competition and, like Seba United and Frome who are above us in the standings, we have just lost one game," she said.
All in action
The competition will once again surge to prominence tomorrow when Seba United, Frome and Granville will all be in action, seeking to strengthen their bid to contest the end-of-round final.
In today's games, Violet Kickers will battle Salt Spring at Cornwall College and Mt Salem oppose Montpelier FC at Mt Salem.
Tomorrow, Negril will host Seba United at the White Hall Housing Scheme in Negril, Granville will entertain Grange Hill at Sam Sharpe Teachers College, Frome will play away to Clarke's Town at the Hyde Community Centre while Wadadah will be at home to Bamboo at the UDC playing field in Montego Bay. All games are slated for 3 p.m. starts.
