PETER WRIGHT'S heart pounded with joy Tuesday night, when it was announced that one of his three boys, 14-year-old Joshua, was voted the most disciplined driver of the 2008 Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) championship.

"I felt very proud of him, because of the three brothers, he is not the fastest, but the one who gets into less accidents on the track," said Wright.

The gentleman

The brothers - Jared, Joshua and Jaden - have been involved in the sport for more than a year, but the JKA singled out Joshua as the gentleman of go-kart racing.

"This is somebody who took his licks, he is really a disciplined guy," commented Neil Williams, vice-president of the JKA.

The Hillel High student was recognised during the JKA's annual awards and presentation ceremony, held at Chez Maria Restaurant, Hillcrest Avenue, St Andrew. The youngster was among several persons who got special awards.

Most improved

Dr Mark Minott walked away with trophy for the Most Improved Driver. Seven-year-old Justin Sirgany was named the Rookie Driver for 2008. He was also crowned the 50cc Champion Driver of the Year.

"I felt wonderful. This is his first year in the sport and he has been excellent. Right now he is preparing for the 80cc Class. So far, he has been doing very good times on the track," said driving coach and father, Steve Sirgany.

Apart from members of the media, sponsors, race meet officials and the respective class champions, Peter Rae and John Orelue were presented with special awards for the "camaraderie displayed during a special occasion last year".
