  • Cricket awards set for February 28

    Thirty-eight awards will be presented by the Business House Cricket Board at its annual presentation function on Saturday, February 28 at a venue to be confirmed.

    These include the board's top trophy to LIME (formerly Cable & Wireless), winners of the Reggae Jammin 50-over competition.

    Former Jamaica batsman Orville Pennant from St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite and current national player Yannick Elliott from LIME won the batting and bowling averages, respectively, in this competition and will receive cash incentives.

    Jamaica Broilers won the Business House 35-over KO competition; St Ann Bauxite took the Best Dressed 30-over KO trophy; LIME took the Digicel 20/20 competition and National Water Commission the annual Hermon Spoerri double-wicket competition for the second straight year.

    LIME are also in line for two other awards. They will receive the C. Lloyd Allen Trophy for the most disciplined team and the Board's trophy as the best-attired team.

    Individual awards

    Meanwhile the board's Sportsman of the Year award will go to Jamaica Broilers' opening batsman Dean Anderson; the Abe Alexander Trophy for the highest score (107) in the Best Dressed competition to national player Andre Russell from Windalco, while the Oscar Hamilton Trophy for best bowling performance in the same competition will go to former Jamaica spin bowler Andre Dwyer (5-19) of St Ann Jamaica Bauxite.

    The Sellie Mitchell Trophy for the highest score in the 35-over competition will go to former Jamaica and West Indies Under-19 player Shacoya Thomas from Jamaica Broilers, who made 103 not out against Continental Baking Company.

    Windalco's Peter Pottinger had the distinction of being the only player to score two centuries in the 50-over competition, while other century-makers were André McCarthy (LIME), Jowayne Robinson and Ian Dewar (Digicel), Brian Wright and Lerone Tyrell (Sagicor Life), Robert Henry (Carib Cement) and Dean Anderson.

    Digicel's Xavier Scott will collect the sterling bowling performance for the 50-over competition, having taken five wickets for three runs against Sagicor.

    Meanwhile, the board's annual general meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, at LIME Sports Club, Chalmers Avenue, and the competition is scheduled to start on Sunday, March 29.

  • Tank-Weld humble All-Business House team

    The 2008 Business House triple champions, Tank-Weld, defeated an All-Business House team 117-103 in a specially-arranged match on Friday night at Tank-Weld, Seaward Drive, St Andrew.

    The All-Business House team was recently selected by the National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB) to play a number of pre-season matches against various teams.

    Those selected were Calman Barrett, Rocky Gibbs, Yaven Dawkins and Andel Ivey (JET), Sean Hinds, Miguel Brown, Peter Timberlake, Gregory Allen (Seprod), Eric Channer, Joseph 'Omar' McCurdy (The Gleaner), Roger Simmons, Michael Grant, Clement Johnson and national coach Clifton Hewitt (Wray & Nephew Rum), Ryan Muir, Errol Robinson (Wray & Nephew Brandy), Tahir Gallow, Kirk Patrick Gordon (NCB), Clifton Atkins, Sean Dunkley (Pepsi) and Neville Thomas, Michael Gordon (Berger Paints).

    Most of the above-mentioned players were in action against Tank-Weld, who last season won the Division One title, the KO competition and also emerged as champion of champions.

    The Tank-Weld players named to the All-Business House team are Marvin Osbourne, Kevin Campbell and Wayne Guthrie.

    According to national coordinator of the NADB, Humbert Davis, registration for this year's Business House competition will commence on February 1. The national association will also facilitate Business House teams from the parishes of St Catherine, Portland, Manchester, St James and Westmoreland.
