What a wonderful week it has been for black people everywhere! Yes, long after this generation has gone to its grave, those to come will be reading about the historic inauguration of America's first black president.
But what a horrible world we still live in. Seems like there will always be those among us who are convinced that black people have no business in the White House unless they are serving a white president or working in some seemingly glass ceiling shattered office job. Well, Obama is black and he is now Mr President, so there!
Now, one thing I watched with interest was the speed with which the former occupants of the White House took their departure so the new occupants could move in. I compared it to how long it usually takes some former government officials to clear out of state residences and offices after a similar change here in Jamaica.
They understand
In fact, the same obtains elsewhere in our landscape, where contracts end but those in the office have grown so used to the lifestyle, they think perks are their personal property. And I also noticed how all government-appointed officials were recalled instantly, computers shut down, BlackBerrys returned and positions terminated. All without them screaming 'victimisation'. Yes, they understand that persons who are party loyalists will always be party loyalists and when one administration ends, they should make way for another set of loyalists.
Much the same way that women should learn that when a relationship ends, they should wipe the slate clean and move on. Don't keep the keys and 'drop by' the former lover's pad on the pretext of collecting something you left when you really intend to spy on the successor. Naughty, naughty. Life has cycles and we should learn to accept their natural ends. Instead of dwelling on the past, let us all try to turn fresh pages in our lives and use the positive messages from President Obama to help us be better human beings.
