Western Bureau:The first title of the 2008-09 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Western Confederation season will be decided this afternoon when Seba United and Frome FC square off in the first end-of-round final in the Captain's Bakery Western Super League at Jarrett Park, staring at 4 p.m.
The Seba United team, which topped the round while still having a game in hand in the 12-team competition, completed their fixture on Thursday with a 1-0 win against Montpelier, which elevated them to 26 points, accumulated through eight wins, two draws and one defeat in eleven games.
Frome, who were being challenged for the second slot in the final by Granville FC, sealed their berth in their final-round game against Wadadah, which they won 3-1 to move to 24 points - two more than the Granville team, which had a 3-0 win against Mt Salem in their last-ditch effort on Thursday.
epic final
Based on the performances of Seba United and Frome, which have both only lost once this season, an epic final is anticipated although Seba United should start favourites by virtue of the fact that the game will be played in their backyard at Jarrett Park.
In addition to their encouraging seven wins, three draws and one defeat record, the Frome team, whose lone defeat came in their 2-1 loss to Seba United, appears quite proficient offensively and defensively, scoring 19 goals and conceding just seven. As a consequence, they must fancy their chances of avenging that defeat.
For Seba United, whose lone defeat came in a 1-0 loss to Wadadah, they also look solid with their impressive 25 goals for and five against record. In addition, they will probably be anxious to prove that their win against Frome was no fluke.
In their bid for victory, the star-studded Seba United, who are expected to feature the likes of player/coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore, Norman Foster, Wilfred Smith, Delroy Ellis and Kemar James, are considered to be as strong as some Digicel Premier League teams and at their best could be hard nuts to crack.
"Once we stick to the basics, we should not have a problem in doing well in this competition," Whitmore said, after taking the decision to start playing again to bring stability to Seba United's midfield. "We have the players to produce good results. We just need to apply ourselves."
Frome, a team which has many former Frome Technical High School daCosta Cup players in their line-up, might be lacking in big stars but, based on their management staff, they are more concerned about playing well as a unit than having individual players fighting for the spotlight.
