Perpetrator or victim?
The Editor, Sir:

With respect to the article entitled - Jamaica - A Hurting Nation - in The Sunday Gleaner dated February 8, Dr Karin Richards should be commended for her insightful diagnosis and prescriptive solutions to the pathological problems that assail the Jamaican society.

She seemed, however, to focus largely on female victims who are singled out as victims of abusive and violent acts which, indeed, is the case. Little or no mention has been made of the main perpetrators of this violence - young males - and how they can be helped for, indeed, they themselves are victims - victims of their environment, of neglect by mothers who seemingly have failed to give them the nurturing and early support in their childhood, not to mention the errant fathers who continue to reject them.

Anger and rage

Obviously, there is a pathological condition of extreme anger and rage that has concentrated and is being expressed by them, not only in the killings taking place but also their bodies (rape) and the manner of their driving on the roads (where vehicles are being used as lethal weapons). The result of such neglect and rejection by parents and society, including the schools, has driven them into the 'arms' of gangs.

Things have gotten out of hand because the leaders have ignored this section of the society without considering the price that is being paid as a result. Where are the male mentors who are so badly needed? Where are the male teachers in the classroom to help give these young men a sense of belonging, hope and direction? The few who contribute in this regard must be commended and encouraged.

A start must be made at the early-childhood level at which young boys (and girls) must be taught peaceful conflict resolution, the art of forgiveness and other worthwhile values such as honesty, compassion and responsibility.

I am, etc.,

GRACE PEART
