Morals and values in peril
The Editor, Sir:

The unprofessional behaviour of our politicians is a perfect illustration of the path down which our country is heading, where ethical and professional principles are concerned. Our last general election revealed the ugly behaviour of some of our politicians and now, as the country faces another political voyage, the same disgusting behaviour and careless utterances are being displayed in the public domain.

This is not from a political perspective, but from the view of someone who feels that we have reached the time when we need persons who will start displaying the type of behaviour we envisage from the men and women of tomorrow's Parliament.

I fail to believe that some of our present politicians, especially the ones in the spotlight at the moment, have any consideration about the violence and crime taking our country into the next century, or else they would try to be more peaceful and professional in their actions and with their utterances, especially in public settings.

Politicians' behaviour

I personally believe the behaviour of our politicians has a major effect on the actions of not only the adults in society, who have subjected themselves to their dishonesty and inappropriate treatment, but, more important, to our country's most precious and valuable resources, our children.

Our children are growing up believing it is customary and acceptable for our politicians to behave in the manner in which they do and present themselves as though they were immune to the laws of Jamaica and accountable only to themselves.

These politicians who sit in Parliament and make the laws of the country and decide what is best for the people of Jamaica behave, even in the eyes of the public, like amateurs.

I am, etc.,
