How is it possible that someone who has pledged allegiance to a foreign country can be a political representative in Jamaica? It does not matter whether the country to which allegiance is given is Commonwealth.
There may be many arguments in favour of, or against a person who has dual citizenship. Isn't it hypocritical to ask one person to give up his/her citizenship in order to represent Jamaica, yet at the same time present a candidate who also has dual citizenship to vie for political office? Commonwealth citizen or not, where does the allegiance lie?
Not concerned with development
Jamaica is Jamaica. Jamaica is not Canada, Australia or any other such Commonwealth country. Those countries are not concerned with our development. While it is true that we may be trading partners with some, they do not care what happens in Jamaica. If they see the need to go to war with Jamaica, they will. They serve their own selfish purposes and defend their own citizens, not Jamaica's and Jamaicans.
The law gives permission for a Jamaican who has dual citizenship with a Commonwealth country to be our political representative. Yet, it is difficult to tell where that person's allegiance lies. What is there to stop that person from running away from Jamaica when he/she feels Jamaica has done all it can, and will go no further? Are their children even educated in Jamaica?
There should be no political representative with dual citizenship. If it is okay for a Commonwealth citizen, it should be okay for everybody else. It is time to stop the hypocrisy!
