State property is not personal property
The Editor, Sir:

Over the years, there has been a contagious phenomenon that us Jamaicans have nurtured. We have resorted to viewing State-owned vehicles as our personal gifts. Has the justice system been so caught - up in looking at large crimes committed, that they just bypass the 'petty' disorder of Government workers? I am puzzled and concerned, as I know many of my fellow Jamaicans are. Who gave us the silly idea that if we work for the State the vehicles that are used for the daily running of that State organisation is ours?

There needs to be more stringent rules to hinder a police officer from driving a State-owned car home. What happens at hours of the night when that vehicle is needed? We have also not learnt how to take care of State property. We drive them to a wreck and then park them. Would we do that with the ones we worked so hard to buy?

We need to learn how to conserve State funds, just the same way as we conserve our own money by opening various accounts, buying shares, and putting money on fixed deposit. Let us acquire the caring spirit and think of our brothers and sisters.

I am etc.,

N. Lawrence
