Proctor case anger
Defence lawyer Tom Tavares-Finson complained Monday that too many applications for adjournments had been made by the Crown in the case of 88-year-old consultant botanist, George Proctor, who is charged with conspiracy to murder his wife.

Proctor and his co-accused, Glenmore Fillington, a 42-year-old driver of Christiana, Manchester, are on bail in the sum of $500,000 each, with sureties.

The case has been set for trial on July 13 in the Home Circuit Court. Senior Puisne Judge Marva McIntosh ordered that the case be placed as a priority on the trial list.

The trial could not proceed Monday because one of the prosecution witnesses was ill.

Tavares-Finson said the defence was ready on most occasions for the trial to proceed. He said on previous occasions the Crown had applied for adjournments to get outstanding exhibits.

The trial will start, ironically, on Proctor's birthday.

The judge granted legal aid assignment of a junior lawyer to assist defence lawyer Donna McIntosh Gayle, who argued that she needed help.

The Crown is alleging that sometime in 2006, Proctor paid Fillington $90,000 to murder his 66-year-old wife. It is alleged that he told Fillington that he was not happy at home and asked him to get someone to murder his wife.

Fillington allegedly got someone to do the job. When divorce was mentioned, Proctor allegedly disagreed with the suggestion, saying it was too much trouble because he would have to cede to his wife half his assets.
