Hungry for 'yard' food
The Editor, Sir:

When one is away from Jamaica, he or she wants to continue to have a taste of Jamaica. We normally search the web, listen to online radio and read the newspapers online.

We also often yearn to eat Jamaican food but this can be an expensive affair. My recent experience is testimony to this.

On Friday, March 13, I purchased a green soursop for US$19.65. The going price was S$5.99 per pound. The place was a Jamaican store in Bloomfield, just a stone's throw from Hartford, Connecticut. This store is frequented by many Jamaicans who wish to keep in touch with their roots and have that Jamaican taste.

Expensive items

About a month ago, I purchased a mango at a non-Jamaican store for US$1.50. It was no good when I cut it. It was 'young', white and spongy inside. It went in the garbage. I am not sure if this will be the fate of my 'premium soursop'.

Soursop and mangoes are not the only expensive items: Yellow yam, coco, fresh fish and thyme are on the high-price list, but we cannot resist the Jamaican taste, so there goes our pocket.

I am, etc.,
