Arnett Gardens and Sporting Central Academy eked out a 0-0 draw in their Digicel Premier League match at Brancourt on Sunday, forcing contrasting responses from their respective coaches.
Fabian Davis, coach of Arnett, who entered the round in seventh position, seemed sure the point acquired was in keeping with his pre-game expectations. Christopher Dawes, his one-time teammate on the national senior team, was utterly disappointed, saying his team had hurt itself after rallying to ninth place, stringing three consecutive wins against Meadheaven, Reno and Rivoli.
"Most definitely," was Davis' response when asked if he was happy with the point.
His team got ample chances to score in either half but he preferred to accept the 0-0 effort, given the larger context of the match where his team came under a lot of pressure to defend.
"Sporting Central is difficult to contain as they play three strikers. We played attacking football and were unlucky not to score, but when you travel on the road to play a team that is expected to use their conditions well, then a draw is not a bad result for us."
The chances he spoke of largely fell to Kwame Richardson and Leon Strickland, who both were denied twice in one-on-one runs on goalkeeper Leighton Murray.
In a game where constant turnovers stiffled any fluency of attack and attractive play, it was Sporting Central who controlled the first 15 minutes of the game but, more pivotally, the last 10 minutes when they created an unending siege on their opponents' goal.
Arnett probably owe a clean sheet to defender Gerald Neil who, after picking up a caution in a tackle on the wily Kark Wiggan, denied the same player with a last-gasp tackle off the line in the closing minute of the game.
