Gayle back for ODIs

Gayle

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (CMC):

Chris Gayle has recovered enough from a strained right hamstring to be named in the West Indies' 13-member squad for the first two One-day Internationals against England on Friday and Sunday in Guyana.

Gayle sustained the injury during the drawn fifth and final Test at Queen's Park Oval last week and was scheduled to be out of action for one or two weeks.

He was sidelined for Sunday's Twenty20 International, which West Indies won by six wickets at the same venue and replaces Andre Fletcher, who opened the batting in his place.

Room for miller

Sulieman Benn, whose three wickets helped set West Indies up for victory on Sunday, has also lost his place in the ODI side and makes room for Nikita Miller, fresh from a nine-wicket performance that helped Jamaica to a 242-run victory over Barbados in the regional first-class competition.

Jerome Taylor was not considered for selection because of a left calf strain that has already forced him to miss the fifth Test and the T20I and compatriot Daren Powell, who played all five Tests against Andrew Strauss' side, takes his place.

Returned to play

Powell returned to play for his native Jamaica in the regional competition and took no wickets for 85 runs, but contributed 69 with the bat in his side's second innings, when they set Barbados 515 for victory.

Dwayne Bravo has also retained his place, after coming through the T20I with flying colours. It was Bravo's first international match for West Indies, since he underwent surgery on his right ankle last November.

Squad: Chris Gayle (captain), Denesh Ramdin (vice-captain), Lionel Baker, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fidel Edwards, Nikita Miller, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith.
