Gender-specific underwear now available

Joanna Sinclair (left), brand trade activator for Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Jamaica, explains to Anjellica Anthony (right) the discreetness the Depend brand of gender-specific underwear offers the woman on the go.

Depend, a line of gender-specific underwear for individuals with incontinence, was launched last Thursday at the Loshusan Supermarket in Barbican Centre.

"The involuntary loss of urine," as Dr Warren Chin, urologist, defined the condition in his brief presentation at the launch, "can be an embarrassing and sometimes socially isolating condition."

He emphasised that although common in Jamaicans, the statistics are lacking. Approximately 10 to 35 per cent of all persons in their adult life will suffer from some sort of incontinence.

Shying away

Some individuals often chalk any form of incontinence up to 'old age', when this is not necessarily true. A variety of reasons can be behind the condition in both sexes, for instance, a weakening of the pubic muscles as a result of multiple births and bladder cancer.

He cautioned individuals to visit their doctor to help diagnose their problem as, in most cases, incontinence can be treated or managed.

He emphasised that with proper medical reference and education, incontinence does not have to take over the lives of individuals.

Joanna Sinclair, brand trade activator at Kimberly-Clark Corporation Jamaica, said it allows individuals to be socially active. Depend is manufactured by Kimberly-Clark Corporation International and distributed by Lascelles.

Product aim

Designed like male and female underwears, the aim is to provide better protection for both sexes through design. Operating on the premise that women have a more pear-shaped body and men more of a round shape, the openings at the legs and the width from hip to waist are designed for comfort and a discreet fit.

The underwear also provides the necessary absorbency in the front for men, and underneath and in the back for women.

The product will retail for approximately $1,800 per pack.
