Western Bureau:

After taking first innings points and an 81-run first-innings lead against Guyana yesterday in their 13th-round WICB Regional Four-day Championship fixture at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay, Jamaica were 215 for seven - an overall lead of 296 - at the close of play.

Dismissing Guyana for 308 in reply to their first innings 389, the Jamaica batting faltered in the second innings and at one stage, they were precariously placed at 169 for six.

However, resilient batting by Daren Powell, who smashed two massive sixes in getting 27, and Brendan Nash, who finished undefeated on 40, somewhat retrieved the situation.

Guyana's bowling

Bowling for Guyana, Davendra Bishoo had three wickets for 36 runs off 16 overs, while Veersammy Permaul had two for 45 off 24 overs and Christopher Barnwell one for 42 off nine overs.

Resuming at their overnight 262 for six and needing another 127 runs to surpass Jamaica's first innings 389, the Guyana innings faltered badly as they added only 46 runs before the innings folded.

After adding nine to his overnight score, Derwin Christian was trapped leg before wicket by David Bernard Jr for 15, making the score 273 for seven. Davendra Bishoo and skipper Assad Fudadin, who resumed overnight on 32, took the score to 300 when Fudadin skied a catch to Odean Brown at mid-off, off spinner Gavin Wallace for 47.

The Guyana's innings quickly folded as Permaul was trapped in front by Wallace for five at 307 and one run later, the innings ended when Brendan Bess was also trapped in front by Bernard without scoring, giving Jamaica first innings points.

Bowling for Jamaica, Bernard emerged the top wicket-taker, bagging four for 86 off 19.2 overs. Wallace took three for 39 off 12 overs, Odean Brown two for 55 off 17 overs and Andrew Richardson one for 39 off 15 overs.

Batting a second time, Jamaica went to lunch at 28 without loss - an overall lead of 109 - with openers Danza Hyatt and Brenton Parchment both looking good.

On the resumption, they added another 31 before Parchment fell to a brilliant catch by Sewnarine Chattergoon off Barnwell for 29, with the score at 59.

Hyatt and Donovan Pagon added 36 for the second wicket before Hyatt played an ambitious shot against Permaul and was well caught by Narsingh Deonarine for 31, making the score 95 for two.

Skipper Tamar Lambert then had a rare failure when he fell to a well-judged catch by Sewnarine Chattergoon off Davendra Bishoo for seven.

Jamaica went to tea at 116 for three, with Pagon unbeaten on 24 and Bernard on two.

Immediately on the resumption, Bernard played a tired-looking stroke against Permaul and was bowled for six.

Nine runs later, wicket-keeper/batsman Carlton Baugh Jr joined him in the pavilion, as he was run out without scoring, to leave Jamaica precariously placed at 129 for five.

Nash added 36 for sixth wicket with Pagon before the latter misjudged a delivery from Bishoo, which he left alone and was adjudged leg before wicket for 43, leaving Jamaica at 161 for six.

Powell, who replaced Pagon, went about retrieving the situation with some powerful strokes as he took on the Guyana attack in the 46-run partnership. However, at 207, Powell miscued a big shot off Bishoo and was caught for 27.

Jamaica, which have already won the tournament, will be presented with the George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy at the end of play today.

AT THE VALLEY, Anguilla: The Leeward Islands, trailing Trinidad and Tobago by 130 runs on first innings, reached 142 for four in their second innings at the close of the third day of their 13th-round match at the Ronald Webster Park yesterday.
