An outpouring of interest and empathy has been sparked by The Gleaner's feature on the plight of 54-year-old Yvette Sterling and her family, who are now displaced because of a fire that razed their home in 2007. So far one group has given tangible assistance.

Last Tuesday, a group of employees at the National Water Commission (NWC) responded to Sterling by presenting her with a sewing machine to kick-start a small business.

The NWC employees, who operate a birthday club, were touched by Sterling's story and decided to help.

A grateful Sterling was a picture of happiness as she accepted the gift from Ruth Ashley, a founding member of the club.

'I really appreciate it'

"I really do thank you for your help at this time, I really do appreciate it," Sterling said, holding back the tears. "Keep doing what you are doing."

In March 2007, Sterling and her family were left homeless as a result of the fire that destroyed their home on Gem Road, Kingston.

Since then, her family has been torn apart, each member seeking refuge with relatives, friends and even strangers.

The mother of seven said she had been through a lot and just needed a start to reunite her family.

"Right now, I am still staying with somebody and it's really rough. Sometimes, I don't have anything to eat," said Sterling.

Persons who wish to provide further assistance to this family can contact them at 294-6114 or 410-2086.
