Another record for Russell
CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC):

Jamaicans collected two of the four gold medals in the hurdles finals that highlighted yesterday's afternoon schedule at the 38th CARIFTA Games at the George Odlum Stadium.

Janieve Russell and Nikita Tracey delivered the gold medals for the Jamaicans while Trinidad and Tobago's Jehue Gordon with a record run and Barbadian Tramaine Maloney took the other hurdles gold medals.

The girls' Under-17 300-metre hurdles provided Russell with her second gold medal and cham-pionship record.

Meet best

After landing long jump gold on Friday night, Russell emerged with the hurdles gold in 41.30 seconds, topping the previous meet best of 41.33 by Jamaican Patricia Hall in 1998. Barbadian Sade Greenidge (42.81) was second.

Tracey, a bronze medallist last year, captured gold in the girls' U-20 400 hurdles in 57.79 seconds, defeating her teammate Danielle Dowie (57.88) and Barbadian Latoya Griffith (59.05).

Gordon set a new U-20 400 hurdles mark when he won gold in 50.01 seconds, bettering the previous mark of 50.85 by Jamaican Gregory Little in 2002. The USVI's Leslie Murray (51.20) and Jamaican Dwayne Extol (52.34) chased the Trinidadian home.

Maloney won the U-17 boys' 400 hurdles in 54.88 ahead of Bahamian Patrick Bodie (55.48) and Kyle Robinson (55.59) of Jamaica.

T&T clutched another gold and championship record yesterday afternoon when Quincy Wilson hurled the discus 55.67 metres to smash a six-year-old mark of 55.20m by Eric Mathias of the British Virgin Islands.

The effort gave Wilson the capture of both discus CARIFTA records, as he also holds the U-17 mark at 52.79 metres.

The Jamaican pair of Travis Smikle (54.42) and Chad Wright (50.62) had to settle for silver and bronze, respectively, behind Wilson.

The 3,000-metre titles were shared between hosts St Lucia and Jamaica.

St Lucian Rolsan Pamphile easily won the U-17 boys' 3,000 in nine minutes 03.16 seconds ahead of Bermuda's Trey Simons (9:07.39) and Jamaicans Sharlene Brown (10:18.04) and Twishana Williams (10:31.36) were first and second, respectively, in the Open girls' 3,000.

The Jamaicans picked up field events gold medals late in the afternoon when Julian Forte took the U-17 boys' long jump at 7.25 metres over T&T's Atiba Wright (6.73m) and Micara Vassell (14.03m) dominated the U-20 girls' shot over Hilenn James (13.80) of T&T.
