Sotomayor for the US Supreme Court

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor meets with Senator Arlen Specter in his hideaway office on Capitol Hill in Washington, last Thursday.

Since the announcement of Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the United States (US) Supreme Court a few weeks ago, much has been said about her gender, ethnicity and rulings, all of which have been put under the microscope. But here are a few facts you might not know about her.

1. If confirmed, Sotomayor will be the third woman ever to sit on the Supreme Court.

2. She was born June 25, 1954.

3. Her father died when she was nine years old.

4. Sotomayor has Type One diabetes. She was diagnosed at age eight.

5. She was married to Kevin Edward Noonan in 1976. They divorced in 1983 after a seven-year marriage.

6. She was born in Bronx, New York, to Puerto Rican parents.

7. She has no children.

8. She has one brother, Juan, who is a doctor.

9. She owns a million-dollar home and has assets worth over million dollars.

10. She has more experience as a judge that any of her prospective colleagues.
