With 12 races scheduled for tomorrow's Derby Day programme, the card will facilitate two Super-6s.
The day's big feature, the 89th running of the United Bookmakers (UBA) Jamaica Derby over 2000 metres, will be run as the 11th race at approximately 5:10 p.m.. while post time for the first race is 11:40 a.m. The Derby is included among the Pick-9 races (4-12).
The UBA will not only sponsor the Derby, but two other major races on the card, including the $1.5 million United Bookmakers Association Sprint (grade one) over 1300 metres, but contribute to the purses of the remaining races in a total sponsorship of $2.5 million.
We look at the second Super-6 which gets under way from the seventh race, the Champion Betting Company Ltd 'Always Bet on A Champion' race over 1820 metres, to be contested by 10 starters,
Starting favourite
RIFLEMAN, the mount of former champion jockey Trevor Simpson, will more than likely start favourite by virtue of his close second to SLEDGE over 1600 metres on May 30 when having the likes of FIRELINK, LUCKY EDDIE, HAILSTORM and TRACKING DEVICE behind. All renew rivalry on slightly improved terms at the weights, but RIFLEMAN is definitely in good nick now and gets the nod over FIRELINK and the front running ARIANA.
MAGNIFICO, despite his below-par effort behind RED LION over 1600 metres recently, won well enough on April 13 at this level to get the vote in the knotty eighth race over 1400 metres to be contested by 10 starters.
This being one of the more open races on the card, I would implore punters to approach it with caution and use multiple choices on their Pick-9 and Super-6, as the back-to-form RED LION, PIECE A FOOT, LATIN KING and the very fit hat-trick seeker TIMOTHY SCOTT should ensure keen competition.
Expected to run well
Briefly, the unbeaten American filly RACING MACHINE ought to be followed when she bids for her seventh consecutive victory in the eighth race, the UBA Sprint. Others expected to run well in the eight-strong field are top sprinter OUTSTANDING, the reigning champion sprinter AHWHOFAH and 'Horse of the Year' ALSAFRA.
Then, use the highly thought of American filly PATTA as a banker in the 10th race over 1200 metres; BRUCEONTHELOOSE (unbeaten in four races this season) to lead home the 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner SAINT CECELIA, as well as THE RED SKULL in the Derby to be contested by 15 starters, before closing the programme with down-in-class THE GUARDIAN.
