Hamilton returned as TOBA boss
Howard Hamilton was re-elected president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) for the 13th consecutive year at its annual general meeting held at the Terra Nova Hotel, Waterloo Road, on Thursday, June 4.

The two-time champion owner was returned unopposed, as was vice-president Philip Feanny. The other directors reappointed were Peter J. Asher (secretary), Ken Gooden, Dr Paul Wright, Richard Azan, Andy Campbell, Derrick Brandt, Alec Henderson, while Dwight Chen was co-opted as an associate director.

Speaking at the AGM, which took the form of a luncheon, were Hamilton and CTL's director Chris Armond, who is chairman of the racing advisory council appointed by Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Don Wehby.

Detrimental to Ctl

Armond said the prevailing "business model" in racing is detrimental to Caymanas Track Limited and needs to be looked at.

In this vein, Armond disclosed that there will be a retreat involving CTL, the Jamaica Racing Commission. the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission and Minister Wehby on June 23 to find ways to improve the revenues of the promoting company.

Hamilton, in his address, bemoaned the small number of veterinarians operating in the industry. "The percentage of foals born from mares reported to be in foal is in the region of 40 per cent, and that would indicate there is a major problem in respect to the veterinary care.

"There is an urgent need for more equine veterinarians with a population of over 2,000 horses. Only five vets are available and this is unacceptable. We need to recruit and start a programme of internship on the farms," he said.
