'Bungles' witnesses rewarded - attorney

Daley

The corruption case against Superintendent Harry 'Bungles' Daley will continue in the Corporate Area Resident Magis-trate's Court today with Detective Inspector of Police Paul Thomas expected to take the witness stand. The lawman did not show up after he was called for during the trial yesterday.

In yesterday's hearing of the case, the defence presented the argument that witnesses Tafari Clarke and his father Linton Clarke were rewarded by the police for the roles they played in implicating Daley.

Daley's attorney, Valerie Neita-Robertson, in cross-examining Assistant Commissioner of Police Justin Felice, asked if he would agree that Tafari Clarke received rewards from the state for his involvement in the case before the courts? Felice disagreed.

Upscale residence

The defence, however, argued that among those rewards dished out was the opportunity for Clarke, a convicted drug offender in the United Kingdom, to travel to the United States. She said Linton Clarke was similarly rewarded with relocation to a more "upscale" place of residence.

The officer, however, said he could not confirm or deny whether Tafari Clarke or Linton Clarke had travelled abroad during the course of the investigation or if Linton had been relocated from a house "without windows, floors or doors" to an "upscale" residence as Neita-Robertson had suggested.

Daley was held by the police in July last year during a sting operation shortly after he allegedly collected $15,000 from Tafari Clarke.

The sum was allegedly collected as protection money for a plaza in Ewarton, St Catherine.

The Crown is alleging that Daley collected a total of $65,000 from Clarke between May 2007 and July 2008 .

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey is trying the case.
