Henry fifth at Calder

Henry

MIAMI, Florida (CMC):

Jamaican racing men Wesley Henry and Kirk Ziadie shared three wins Sunday to maintain prominent positions in their respective championship tables at Calder racetrack.

Henry rode two winners to climb to fifth in the jockeys' standings, and Ziadie, the defending champion trainer here, picked a victory in the fourth race to stay second in the title race.

In the US$10,800 second race over a mile and 70 yards, Henry outgunned leading jockey Manoel Cruz in an exciting homestretch duel to score an upset win by a neck.

Strong finish

Riding the 16-to-1 outsider Lost Conquest, Henry rallied the six-year-old horse to a strong finish and edged Cruz aboard the 2-1 favourite Polar Star at the finish.

Lost Conquest covered the trip in one minute, 46.31 seconds.

Henry, a former Jamaica champion jockey, also won the US$10,000 fifth race over a mile by a narrow margin.

He led the 10-horse field with the 3-1 bet Red Hot Candy and held on to score by three quarters of a length, resisting the fast finishing 36-1 outsider Playful Pal and the favourite Soy Latino (7-5) in 1:42.62.

Runaway leader

With 28 winners in the current season, Henry trails runaway leader Manoel Cruz (106), Jeffrey Sanchez (50), Eduardo Nunes (39) and Javier Santiago (36) in the jockeys' standings.

Ziadie's seven-year-old gelding Otis Ridge easily won the US$14,500 fourth race over a mile by six lengths.

With Cruz riding, the favourite Otis Ridge (6-5) took control entering the homestretch and pulled clear for a big win in 1:41.31.

The win was Ziadie's 20th of the season and moved him to within two of leading trainer Martin Wolfson (22).
