Seven days of celebration in tribute to the nation's 47th year of Independence kicks off today as Mello Go Roun' gets underway this evening at the National Arena starting at 8 p.m. Inspired by Miss Lou's Ring Ding, performers have been drawn from across the island to participate in the event which will include items in speech, dance, drama, music and traditional folk forms.
"The show is a potpourri of the best performances presented in the National Festival of the Performing Arts competitions and will be testimony to the wealth of talent that the island possesses," said coordinator, Jennifer Garwood. "This showcasing of talent is in keeping with the theme for Jamaica Festival of 'I Believe in Jamaica' and at the JCDC, we are exhibiting our belief in the creative industry," Garwood added.
With the absence of the Festival of the Arts concert series, Mello Go Roun' promises to attract a massive audience as it will be the sole opportunity for Jamaicans to view highlights from the National Performing Arts competitions.
Jamaica Festival is a week-long celebration to mark the nation's achievements over 47 years of Independence. Other major activities will include Emancipation Vigils, Augus' Fair, World Reggae Dance Championships, Jamaica Gospel Song Finals, an Emancipation/Independence Forum along with the Independence Float Parade and Grand Gala on August 6.
