Malahoo-Forte given duties
NEWLY APPOINTED Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Marlene Malahoo-Forte, has been given portfolio duties to formulate new trade agreements and see to their implementation.

The former-judge-turned-state-minister was sworn in at King's House on July 15.

In his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Gordon House yesterday, Dr Kenneth Baugh, minister of foreign affairs and foreign trade, said the Jamaica Trade and Adjustment Team would now be transformed into the Jamaica Trade Policy Consultation and Coordination Mechanism (JTPCCM). Its mandate, according to Baugh, would include direct consultation with companies engaged in foreign trade initiatives and regular high-level public/private sector consultation.

Baugh reported that Malahoo-Forte would chair the activities of the JTPCCM.

He said the new body would engage its private sector partners in intensive discussions on how the country could better take advantage of trade agreements.

He said the new state minister would also play a role in overseeing the implementation of the Economic Partnership Agreement and free trade agreements.
