... now meet Amos Tucker
If there's one man who knows Port Maria, it's Amos Tucker.

At 91 years young (he'll be 92 on August 5), Tucker has lived in St Mary's capital his entire life. For him, modern times can't compare to the good old days.

"When I was a boy, you used to have five banana ships down at the dock. It (the time) was more productive. Port Maria was decent, quiet and everything that is good. Now you have to grill up yuh place," he said.

We spotted him taking a rest from cutting the grass around the United Church of Jamaica and Grand Cayman Port Maria (Kirk) building. Tucker is not just a member, but also the caretaker, and says he has been doing the job for a long time. We marvelled at his ability and willingness to continue working.

"Everybody into quick money, nobody wants to work again like this. Dem more hostile and have no discipline. Yuh neva used to hear dem nasty things that dem saying now," he lamented.

He recalled times when murders seemed like they took place years apart. "Now, man a kill you because dem tink dem nah go heng!"

Tucker was quick to point out, though, that not all the young people were lazy or disobedient, and it was those who need all the support.

"Anytime you find one that put their head to the wind, lift them up because you have a good one," he said.

The 91-year-old explained that 'head to the wind' was a term used by sailors who had to catch the wind to direct their boats in the desired direction, hence, a young person who is going in the right direction. He believes there is hope for the capital.

"A God Almighty alone can change things," he said, lifting his hands to the heavens. Appropriate words from a churchman.
