Under-19s take aim at defending champions
Jermaine Lannaman, Gleaner Writer

Fresh from their come-from-behind victory in the three-day format, Jamaica's Under-19 cricketers will today turn their attention to the one-day TCL Group WICB Trophy when they face off with defending champions Trinidad and Tobago at Up Park Camp.

After losing to Trinidad in their opening three-day fixture, Jamaica went on to win four straight to capture the title, and will be hoping to exact revenge against the Trinidadians, who eventually finished runners-up, and with it claim the coveted double.

The day's other contests will see dethroned three-day champions Barbados going up against the Windward Islands at Kensington Park, and Guyana tackling the Leeward Islands at Chedwin Park. The championship will be played on a round-robin basis.

Three-day format

"It's a different format, which will require a different application. But I think the players are up to it and if we were to exhibit a similar effort as we did in the three-day format, I am confident we can take the double," said Jamaica's coach, Andre Coley.

"Our fitness and conditioning trainer, Gibbs Williams, has done a tremendous job and the guys in general, except the wicketkeeper, who picked up an ankle injury in the last match, are fit and ready. They really enjoyed the victory and want to make the country proud again," he declared.

In the three-day championship, Jamaica were thoroughly outplayed by the Trinidadians, who won by a comfortable innings and 64 runs.

Jamaica are expected to make at least one change to their line-up which defeated Barbados for the three-day crown, with injured Clarendon College wicketkeeper, Kirk Harris, expected to make way for part-timer, Manchester High batsman, Kemar Marshall.

Regular captain, Holmwood Technical's Andre Creary, who was part of the West Indies squad for the first Test and missed the three-day championship as result of a hamstring injury, has not yet fully recovered, and is expected to miss the one-day championship also.
