The $11.8 million Supreme Ventures three-race series for native bred two-year-olds gets under way at Caymanas Park today, with the $2.95 million Cash Pot 'Only One For Me' Trophy over 1200 metres taking centre stage.
Dubbed the 'Ultra Rich Triple Series', the series, in addition to attractive purse money, offer a million-dollar bonus to the owner of the two-year-old good enough to win all three races.
Supreme Ventures has committed $6.5 million towards the purses this year, up from $5.86 million in 2008.
The series, now in its fifth year, will continue on Saturday, November 28, with the $3.6 million Pick-3 Super Challenge Trophy race over 1400 metres, culminating on Boxing Day with the $4.25 million Supreme Ventures 2-Y-O Stakes over 1600 metres.
Meanwhile, 10 starters have been declared for the Cash Pot 'Only One For Me' Trophy' (Grade III) and judging from the quality on show, it promises to be keen.
A notable absentee is the impressive SPORTS STAR, who is unbeaten in two starts. He is nursing sore shins.
Three-cornered tussle
With SPORTS STAR expected to enter the series later on, today's race should resolve itself into a three-cornered tussle involving the unbeaten REGAL SENSATION from the Nunes camp, PRINCE THEO, who finished a creditable second to SPORTS STAR in that fast-run race on October 3 and AL FOUZIA, who has impressed with runaway wins in her last two races.
REGAL SENSATION is unbeaten in three starts thus far and, although yet to win as commanding as AL FOUZIA, is a good mover who will enjoy the additional 200 metres of this race and should prove highly competitive under two-time champion jockey Brian Harding.
It would appear that the Dwight Chen-trained PRINCE THEO has a better chance than REGAL SENSATION in a race of this nature.
A dark bay colt by Image Maker out of Champion Melody, PRINCE THEO won easily over 800 metres straight on his September 5 debut, only to run smack into SPORTS STAR in his subsequent race over 1100 metres and was beaten 2 3/4 lengths behind a fast 1:06.1. His personal time was almost 1:06.4 and the fact that he has looked well at exercise speak volumes for his chances today.
Despite his sound claims, preference is for the filly AL FOUZIA, who whipped SILENT IMAGE by all of 7 1/2 lengths in the Dewhurst Stakes over 1300 metres on September 23, covering the distance in the good time of 1:20.2 with Shane Ellis aboard.
Prior to that, the bay filly from the stables of Rowan Mathie romped home by 5 1/2 lengths over 800 metres straight and, with five runs under her girth, is one of the most experienced in the field. That should count for a lot and having gone from strength to strength, AL FOUZIA looks the right choice, with Ellis again in the saddle.
I also like POINT AND CLICK in the second race, AHWHOFAH (working brilliantly) in the None Such Sprint, CLASSY COMPANY in the fourth, THE BEST MAN in the seventh and ROMEZ in the nightpan.
Digicel Rising Stars winner, Brown Sugar, will provide the entertainment at the track.
