Williams goal sets up historic win for RSL

Williams

SANDY, Utah (CMC):

Jamaican midfielder Andy Williams struck a fine late goal and helped Real Salt Lake (RSL) score their first-ever victory over the New York Red Bulls in US Major League Soccer (MLS) on Wednesday night.

On as a substitute, Williams notched a 1-0 lead for RSL 10 minutes from the end and Fabian Espindola sealed the win in the last minute at RSL's Rio Tinto Stadium.

The win kept RSL's play-off hopes alive with two regular season games remaining.

RSL constantly attacked and finally broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when Williams, on as a 63rd-minute substitute, hit a neat volley past Danny Cepero in New York's goal.

Broke free

Speedy forward Robbie Findley broke free down the right flank and crossed to the far post where Williams - after making a 35-yard run to the far post - connected with a firm left-footer from six yards.

"We kind of figured if we kept knocking, the door was going to open and fortunately it did tonight," Williams said.

Just before the final whistle, Espindola made the game safe for RSL, who were collecting their first-ever win in 11 meetings all-time with New York.

RSL coach Jason Kreis was pleased that his team controlled the game and that he introduced Williams at a key stage of the game.

"He did exactly what was asked. I felt we were playing really well up until that point, but we needed a little extra spark and Andy Williams was exactly what we needed," Kreis said.

"It's fantastic for me to see Andy coming in and being a factor in that match, playing so well and scoring," Kreis added.

RSL face play-off contenders Toronto FC this afternoon at BMO Field in Ontario.

"We're pretty confident. It's going to be a tough game because they're in the same spot as us, needing a win, but the pressure is on them playing at home," Williams said.
