Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced that there will be new taxes almost as soon as the country signs an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. The Gleaner visited the streets of downtown Kingston on Monday and asked, 'If you were asked to pay more taxes, on what items you would be willing to pay this increase?'

Denae Gordon, 23, customer service representative

Items not essential for our daily living such as accessories, cosmetics, clothing and hair extensions. You find that a lot of persons normally go overboard when it comes on to these items, so they can be taxed, but the essential items must be spared.

I believe that some household items and skin-lightening products should be taxed because these are things that people don't have to buy regularly. Maybe taxing the bleaching cream will cause less persons to bleach, as it would be more expensive and out of the reach of some persons.

The prime minister should tax hair products, nails and facial products because these are not vital to life. He must stay away, where tax is concerned, from things that would affect the poor.

Items not important for survival such as things that have to do with entertainment. These are not important, but food is, so the Government should not tax food.

Unnecessary items such as guns and things that we don't buy every day, such as clothes, are the things the Government must tax.
