Major Warrenton Dixon, recently elected president of the Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA), says he is looking forward to working with Arlene Morgan and Tamika Pennicott, who were both elected to the posts of general secretary and treasurer, respectively, of the association's executive at a special general meeting last Saturday.

The elections, which took place at the Jamaica Defence Force Conference Room, saw Morgan, who is from UWI Volleyball Club, getting the better of MOSA's Hyper Nelson and Vikings Volleyball Club's Mark Lewis; while Pennicott was the only nominee for her post.

The appointments are effective for a two-year duration.

Competent candidates

"I am extremely happy with the fact that we have gotten over this hurdle in our life as an association," said Dixon, who under a month ago was elected unopposed as president.

"As indicated previously, I know that whosoever was elected to the executive would benefit volleyball and I look forward to working with both.

"Miss Morgan has served volleyball in the past in the capacity of general secretary and her experience should serve the association very well. Miss Pennicott has a very impressive curriculum vitae and should be very competent in dealing with financial matters of the association," he added.

Dixon, in the meanwhile, explained that with the elections now out the way, the new executive will be meeting very shortly as the business of volleyball, which was put on hold for several months because of the resignation of some members earlier this year, needs to be dealt with urgently if the sport is to move forward.

"Our next step will be to meet and select other members of the committee, who can add knowledge and experience in various managerial capacities. From there, the aim is to put together an effective development plan that will drive the association's actions for the next four years," Dixon explained.

Immediate outstanding management positions that need to filled include that of a technical director and a beach volleyball manager, both of whom are critical if Jamaica is to take advantage of its potential in the international beach- volleyball circuit and qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.
