IN A gutsy display, AD INFINITUM, responding to a brilliant ride from Dane Nelson, lowered the colours of Triple Crown winner and 4-5 favourite ALSAFRA to win the 30th running of the CTL Superstakes before a bumper crowd at muddy Caymanas Park yesterday.

Going off at odds of 7-1 in a star-studded field of 10, the consistent six-year-old bay gelding from the stables of top-flight trainer Anthony 'Baba' Nunes, closed up strongly on the rails to sweep past brilliant three-year-old filly ALSAFRA, under two-time local champion, the Trinidadian Brian Harding, midway through the last furlong to win by three-quarters of a length.

Met her match

The Fitznahum Williams-trained ALSAFRA, winner of five races in a row coming into the Superstakes, met her match on a waterlogged course due to intermittent showers throughout the afternoon.

ALSAFRA has been selected to represent Jamaica in the Caribbean Classic in Puerto Rico on December 7 and was scheduled to leave the island tomorrow.

However, neither the trainer nor the groom has been granted a United States visa and, according to reports, the horse will not leave without them.

The Philip Feanny-trained RUM TALK, who was backed down to odds of 7-2 despite running poorly in his two previous races, ran a much improved race (prominent) to finish 3 3/4 lengths third under Florida-based Jamaican jockey Allen Maragh, while fourth went to the winner's lesser fancied stable companion IT IS I at odds of 9-1, with US-based Jamaican jockey Andrew Ramgeet aboard.

The big disappointment was the performance of last year's winner MAJOR MAYER (5-2) who finished fifth with customary jockey Richard 'Biah' Mitchell riding for trainer Michael McIntosh.

IT IS I led passing the stands for the first time ahead of the 26-1 outsider AGUILA, MAJOR MAYER and ALSAFRA. As the race progressed, IT IS I still held an uncontested lead at the half-way stage but ALSAFRA, racing on the inside rails, was soon sent in chase and came through on the inside to assume the lead at the final bend.

During all of this, AD INFINITUM was never far off the pace in fifth position at the half mile and took closer orders approaching the home turn to straighten four lengths fourth.

Although ALSAFRA raced into a clear lead approaching the distance, she drifted out under pressure leaving the furlong pole and was cut down by the fast-finishing AD INFINITUM, responding to a torrid left-hand stick from Nelson to give the jockey the biggest win of his career.

AD INFINITUM, who had previously won the Governor General's Stakes over the distance under top weight on October 20, is owned by Barbados-based Elias Haloute and bred by Orange Valley Estates Limited. This was Haloute's third Superstakes win behind TERREMOTO (1998) and PITTACUS (2003), both trained by Nunes.

other major winners

The other major races on the 13-race programme saw the fleet-footed three-year-od filly AHWHOFAH, ridden by champion jockey Omar Walker for owner Winston Kong and champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, outfinishing long-time leader OUTSTANDING (4-1) to win the 20th running of the CTL Caribbean Sprint Championship over 1200 metres, this as the 8-5 favourite.

There was a huge upset in the CTL Imported Mile, victory going to the 43-1 outsider ENGLISH STORM, ridden by apprentice Jason Simpson for owner/trainer Carl Anderson.

She just held on in a blanket finish from 99-1 outsider LIKKLE BIT closing fast on the inside and highly-fancied top weight CHADMAN, with Walker astride, on the outside.
