'Take back Jamaica' - GG urges media to join initiative to build hope
Arthur Hall, Senior Staff Reporter

Allen

Governor General Dr Patrick Allen has issued a plea to the local media to join his campaign to save Jamaica from the criminals, hooligans and thugs who are threatening to take over the country.

"Today, I seek the help of the media in carrying the 'I believe' message. It is a message of hope intending to build confidence in every Jamaican at every level, race, age or stage in every line of endeavour," Allen said yesterday as he addressed members of the media at King's House.

Wants media help

It is a message that Allen has trumpeted since his inauguration in February and now he wants the media to help spread that word of hope at a time when Jamaica is facing grave economic and social challenges.

"My heart aches for Jamaica when I see what it has become in spite of what it can be. I implore the media not to highlight violence - deprive the wannabe television stars of their few minutes of fame," Allen said as he applauded the decision of sections of the media to highlight positive, uplifting news.

"It is your duty to report on the facts and keep the nation informed. However, the manner in which the information is portrayed impacts greatly on the mindset and outlook of individuals. It is so embarrassing to see even more educated and influential persons in society copying the outrageous conduct portrayed," Allen added.

In a challenge to journalists, Allen called on the media to walk with him - or ahead of him - in inspiring hope and confidence in Jamaicans.

"I believe we can take Jamaica back, one town at a time, and we can restore confidence in Jamaicans."

Allen, the former head of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jamaica, also repeated his call for the religious community to use its moral authority to lead the charge to transform Jamaica.
