At first, the invitation offering soca and sushi at polo raised some quizzical eyebrows. On the face of it, this was one very strange combination. The promise of polo, however, was enough to whet the appetites of the aficionados of the sport. The thought of sushi added a lovely twist to the menu, but soca? It was thought right out of left field and made it all that more interesting.

And so it was that many ventured out to the Kingston Polo Club last Sunday for the NCB Capital Markets-sponsored and hosted Jamaica Open, at Caymanas Estates in St Catherine.

With the stipulated dress code being all-white and the occasion pitting Jamaica against the visiting Argentine team, y'all know we are talking a fashionable event. Well my dears, it was like that, and then some!

Dears, it proved the perfect antidote against the drudgery and talk of economic meltdown and depression. The polo crowd, aficionados and the fashionable all motored out to the Caymanas Estates dressed in whites and other finery. And dears, it proved the only and hottest event of the season!

Fabulously happening day

My daahlings, we are talking about a fabulously happening day here, punctuated by Grey Goose martinis, the mint cooler proving to be the 'belle' of the bar; Haägen Dazs treats; sushi and tempura and loads of other goodies adding to the charm and beauty of the outing.

In the end, the Jamaican team, captained by newly promoted government minister James Robertson, won out over the visiting Argentine team. The victory gave way to celebrations and only then did the soca component of the fare come into her own. Dearhearts, it made for a marvellous do, and then some!

Among those sharing in the occasion were Industry Minister Carl Samuda and his lovely wife, Pauline; king of polo and insurance industry icon, Dennis Lalor; land baron Alex Hamilton and his betrothed Erica Downer; businessman Kenny Benjamin; Danny Melville; Dr John Masterton; chairman of the NCB Foundation and founder of the Island Grill chain of stores, Thalia Lyn; NCB Group MD Patrick Hylton and his celebrated wife, Olympian Brigette Foster-Hylton; Head of NCB's Capital Markets Chris Williams; Dr Guyan Arscott; Dr Michael Banbury and his son, Zachary; and JTB's David Shields.

Also out were Mexican ambassador and fashion belissima, Leonora Rueda; Canadian High Commissioner Denis Kingsley and wife, Jo Ann; Deputy Consul General of the Thai Kingdom, Captain David McRae; the lovely Nora Parnell Perez; Dr Peter Glaze; the revered Fae Ellington; Patrick Bailey; Randy Mair and wife, Nicola; her sis, the charming Felicity Crosswell-Brandt. We also spotted the oh-so-fab Toni Parke-Moodie-Panton; Dexter Chin and his companion, Roberta Matthies; Chris Armond and companion, Allison Desnoes; Sam Cooper and his fab wife, Sabrina; her twin sis, Samantha Deleon-Samuda and her hubby, Justin Samuda; Wayne and Karen Vaz; the lovely Dominique Peterkin; Andrew Desnoes, and wife, Natalie Desnoes; his sibling, Anthony Desnoes and wife Nora-May; the lovely Zara Drummond; Warren Burrowes and his companion, the lovely Nagina Delfosse-Ingleton; the celebrated Charles Hussey and his fab wife, Alicia; FAME FM radio's Francois St Juste; the elegant Desne Matthews; Harry and Ann Marie Smith; Vinay Walia and companion Sidjae Robinson; the fab Odessa Chambers; Anita Massias; the lovely Michelle Thompson; plus several others, but what a fine day it was!
