Ja dominate 400m at Carifta Games

Shericka Jackson ... won girls' Under-17 400m in record time.

CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC):

Jamaican athletes domi-nated the 400 metres events on yesterday's second day of the 38th Carifta Games at the George Odlum Stadium.

At press time yesterday the defending champions had 23 medals comprising 12 gold, seven silver and four bronze medals.

Jodiann Muir clocked 53.49 to win the Under-20 girls 400m ahead of Danielle Dowie (53.96) in a Jamaican one-two finish, T&T's Alena Brooks getting third in 54.38 seconds.

Shericka Jackson repeated as girls' Under-17 400-metre champion in a meet record 53.48 seconds, erasing fellow Jamaican Claudine Williams' 17-year-old mark of 53.50 seconds as she topped Bahamians Rashan Brown (53.93) and Katrina Seymour (54.17).

The Jamaicans completed the junior one-lap double when Jermaine Fyffe took the boys' Under-17 crown at 47.96 seconds ahead of Barbadian Shaquille Alleyne (48.13) and Jamaican Jovan Williams (48.85).

The outstanding 400m time was returned by Grenada's 16-year-old marvel Kirani James who smashed Usain Bolt's record and denied Jamaica a sweep of the 400-metre events.

James sped to a superb 45.45 second clocking to win the Under-20 boys' one-lap gold, shattering Bolt's previous meet record of 46.35.

He won ahead of his teammate and defending champion Rondell Bartholomew.

Dethroned champion Bartholomew took the silver in a fast 45.58, also inside Bolt's mark.

Jodiann Muir clocked 53.49 to win the Under-20 girls' 400 ahead of Danielle Dowie (53.96) in a Jamaican one-two finish, T&T's Alena Brooks getting third in 54.38 seconds.

Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago's Gavyn Nero shattered a 23-year-old record to retain his 1500-metre title ahead of Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell.

Nero clocked three minutes 47.56 seconds to erase Jamaican Anthony Christie's 1986 mark of 3:51.05.

In a thrilling duel down the homestretch with Campbell, Nero surged to victory and landed his ninth Carifta Games gold medal.

Campbell was also inside the long-standing record as he took silver in 3:48.18, with Jamaican Conroy Crossman third in 3:54.52 and T&T's Kendis Bullard (3:58.64) fourth.

On Friday's first day, Jamaica's middle-distance standout Natoya Goule smashed the first record of the Games with a brilliant 1500-metre run.

Goule clocked a blistering four minutes 27.48 seconds in the Under-20 girls' 1500 metres and took almost four seconds off Jamaican Janice Turner's 18-year-old mark of 4:31.33 while landing a remarkable ninth Carifta Games gold medal.
